Managing Acute Psychosis in Young Adults: Nursing Insights and Strategies

Nursing - Psychiatric Nursing

A 21-year-old woman living at home with her parents was recently assessed by mental health crisis services following a referral from her general practitioner. Over the past year, since withdrawing from university, the patient had become increasingly withdrawn, spending most of her time in her room. Interactions with her parents were frequently marked by anger and accusations that they were spying on her, and on some occasions, the patient threatened them with violence. During assessment, the patient reported hearing voices, which were sometimes comforting and at other times threatening, and described grandiose beliefs, including the ability to predict the future and uncertainty about whether her parents were her real parents. Initially, the patient agreed to take antipsychotic medication and remained well for over a year. However, over the last 6 weeks, her mental state deteriorated, and she stopped taking her medication. This decline culminated in an aggressive incident towards her mother, leading to her informal admission to an acute mental health ward. Due to her refusal to take medication and comply with ward protocols, she is currently detained under Section 3 of the Mental Health Act 1983 (amended 2007).
