Nursing - Critical Care Nursing
An elderly woman in her eighties residing in a nursing home was accidentally administered a scalp lotion (containing mometasone furoate, isopropyl alcohol, propylene glycol, hyprolose, monobasic sodium phosphate combination) into her left eye. Shortly after receiving the drops, the patient experienced immediate pain, burning, and discomfort in her eye, and she alerted the nursing staff that the wrong eye drops might have been given. The staff promptly responded by thoroughly flushing her eye with normal saline, which provided quick relief from her symptoms. They then contacted the general practitioner, who advised them to continue irrigating the eye with saline and to monitor for any worsening symptoms, with instructions to report back if there were further concerns. No ophthalmology referral was made at that time. The pharmacy supplying the medication was notified about the incident, and the bottle was subsequently re-labelled to prevent future errors. Fortunately, the patient did not sustain any serious or lasting harm from this medication error apart from temporary pain and discomfort, which resolved quickly after immediate management.
