There is a strong inverse relationship between the complexity of a treatment and adherence: the more inconvenient and complex a medical regimen, the less likely it is that patients will adhere. Conversely, simplifying treatment regimens can improve adherence. For instance, prior work has demonstrated that providing a 90-day supply of medications is associated with higher adherence rates than a 30-day supply. The question is how to get clinicians to adopt this practice.
